Sophia Kyriakou
Sophia Kyriakou was born in Syros, Greece, in 1974. She lives and works in Athens.
She studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Professor G. Psychopedis and, through the Erasmus Programme, at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona.
Her works are included in the collections of the Cyclades Art Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Florina, the ISAP (Athens–Piraeus Electric Railways) Collection, the Alpha Bank Art Collection, as well as in private collections.
From 2007 to 2011, she taught Painting and Stage Design at the Department of Fine and Applied Arts in Florina, University of Western Macedonia.
Between 2012 and 2014, together with a fellow artist, she co-founded Owl Art Space and developed the visual arts trilogy Metrologos. From 2014 to 2017, she taught in the Lifelong Learning Programme of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, University of Western Macedonia, in Athens, while also working as a Visual Arts educator in primary and secondary education.
She holds an Interdepartmental Master's degree in Applied Clinical Sociology and Art, jointly offered by the University of the Aegean and the University of Western Macedonia. Her research project, Fleves. The Eco Art Project, explores intervention-based artistic practices that promote environmental protection through art and culture. During 2022–2023, she attended the programme Performance: Theory and Practical Application at the University of Patras, coordinated by Maro Galani.
In recent years, her artistic practice has focused on ecological and environmental issues. She is particularly interested in archive-based artistic approaches, investigating archival material through dialogue with contemporary concepts and critical concerns. Her work engages with the notion of wandering as a reflective practice, connecting chance encounters and incidental events with broader social and environmental phenomena. She is the founder and coordinator of the Eco Flaneur collective.
She has presented nine solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Greece and internationally.
